Help with fighting nuisance

Highcroft Quarry
Events held  The law allows landowners to hold events on their land on no more than 28 days a year (14 days for markets, bike or car racing and speed trials).   The owner does not need planning permission.  The best local residents can do is to contain events to no more than 28 days a year.

Because it is a quarry, the enforcement authority is Somerset County Council.  If you notice an event, report it to Martyn Ford, Senior Enforcement Officer, Environmental Management, Somerset County Council, County Hall, Taunton, TA1 4DY, phone 01823 358226, email: mjford@somerset.gov.uk.  He keeps the log.  Tell us too.   We will also report it and add it to our log below.

Noise  Some events – especially shooting – are very noisy.   In law, noise can be a nuisance as “an unlawful interference with a person’s use or enjoyment of land”.   It can be a "statutory nuisance".  If an event is noisy and bothering you, complain.   The more people who complain, the better.

This time, Mendip District Council is the enforcement authority.  Call Ian Parkman, Environmental Health Officer, phone 01749 341499, email ian.parkman@mendip.gov.uk.  Out of normal office hours, an environmental health officer is available to investigate and take action if warranted.  Call 0300 303 8588, select option 4, then option 5.

Help enforcement - keep a Nuisance Diary.  Tell us too.   We will report it and add it to our log (see below).

Above all - don’t suffer, complain.
